Active by Nature

Active by Nature is located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, in the spectacular mountain town of Canmore, Alberta. Formed in 2007 by sole proprietor, Mandy Johnson, Active by Nature offers instruction in NORDIC WALKING.

Nordic Walking mimics cross-country skiing, but without the skis! It TURBO CHARGES walking, turning into a total body workout that utilizes virtually every muscle in your body in a gentle yet effective way. It promotes good posture, burns MEGA CALORIES, provides exceptional stability on all sorts of terrain, and off-loads stress from the lower body.

Whether you are super fit or just embarking on a fitness program, Nordic Walking is a perfect physical activity choice. Active by Nature exclusively uses Urban Poles for fitness walking and ACTIVATOR™ poles for older adults, persons with mobility issues, and persons recovering from injury. Ergonomically designed and strapless for safety, these poles are the best Nordic Walking equipment in Canada and endorsed by health practitioners across the country.

Mandy provides clinics and leads walks in Canmore. Can there be any place better in the world to go walking? Mandy is the Alberta Ambassador for Urban Poling, promoting Canada's leading brand of Nordic walking around the province. Working in partnership with Vision Travel, Mandy is hosting Nordic walking adventures in exciting global destinations: "Go where the poles take you!"

Questions

What is the difference between the Quick-Start Nordic walking tour and the Nordic walking tour.

Nordic walking technique is taught in the Quick-Start tour, which is 1.5 hours. If you have never experienced Nordic walking, this is the ideal experience to start with. If you have tried Nordic walking before, the 2 hour Nordic walking tour is the experience for you. You are welcome to take a Nordic walking tour with no experience, but keep in mind the focus of the tour is not on learning the technique but exploring Canmore on foot.

Is there a minimum age?

The minimum age is 12.

What is the maximum group size?

Normally, the maximum group size is 10. Larger groups may be accommodated by calling to discuss numbers and ability levels. Custom tours are available for groups of 4 or more.

What equipment is provided?

Urban Poles, Canada’s leading brand of Nordic walking poles are provided for all experiences. They are different from other Nordic walking equipment and totally different from hiking or trekking poles. Icers (also called ice cleats) are provided in winter conditions.

What should I wear (spring, summer, fall)?

Wear a T-shirt & tights/hiking or athletic pants. Be sure to bring a warm extra layer & rain jacket, just in case.

Running shoes are fine while light trail or hiking shoes provide even more support and are ideal. Please no flip-flops or sandals.

Leave purses at home. A small backpack is a great bring-along.

Bring water, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellant and don't forget your camera!

What should I wear in the winter?

Wear a long sleeve t-shirt/thermal underwear top plus 1 or 2 layers (i.e.: light fleece top, heavier fleece top) & a wind/waterproof shell.

Wear winter boots or lined hiking boots. Icers which go over your footwear to prevent slipping, are provided.

Leave purses at home. A small backpack is a great bring-along.

Bring water, gloves/mitts, a hat/headband, scarf/buff/neck warmer, tissues/handkerchief, sunglasses and don't forget your camera!

What level of fitness is required?

To ensure maximum enjoyment, the ability to walk non-stop for an hour is recommended. Don’t worry about being able to keep up, tactics will be used to ensure people walk at their comfortable pace but the group stays together.
